    The Marquette Area Public School District includes four elementary schools, two middle schools and Marquette Senior High School. In addition to the usual curricula, the Marquette school system offers programs such as adult enrichment, English as a Second Language and after-school programs. The high school has the distinction of housing the Shiras Planetarium, which was opened in 1965. The planetarium contains an optical mechanical class projector capable of projecting over 3,000 points of light to simulate the night sky. There are various exhibits contained in 7 rotating showcases and telescopes are available for visitors to enjoy.

Northern Michigan University began in 1899 as Northern State Normal School with 32 students and 6 faculty members on a 22-acre campus. Its focus at that time was to educate teachers. In 1963, Northern was granted university status and today encompasses 320 acres and offers diverse educational opportunities. In addition to offering traditional college coursework, NMU is home to the U.S. Olympic Education Center. The center provides resident athlete programs in biathlon, boxing, cross-country skiing, luge, ski jumping, short-track speed skating, and Greco-Roman wrestling. The university also boasts the largest wooden dome in the world. Northern Michigan University Superior Dome seats 8,000 and is used for sports, instruction, recreation, and community events.

The Marquette Maritime Museum, a stone Richardsonian Romanesque-style structure, was opened in 1982. It features Great Lakes maritime history exhibits and also contains a lighthouse lens collection. The Upper Peninsula Children’s Museum reflects the history and culture of the early residents of the Marquette County area.

Marquette Harbor Lighthouse, built in 1853, is located on an active U.S. Coast Guard resident station. This bright red structure is one of the oldest buildings in Marquette and is one of the most photographed and picturesque lighthouses on Lake Superior. Big Bay Point Lighthouse is a working lighthouse with seven guest rooms that provide visitors with a unique bed-and-breakfast experience.
